Everyday Math
By MK

Clip to ScrapBook
Everyday Math is a wonderful program. It is more challenging for the students, but at the same time so much of it is practical math skills that it really helps kids understand how math is used in so many areas of our life.
The
program is on a sprial, so for example fractions may be introduced as early as Kindergarten, but the kids are not expected to master it until 4th grade. They have a Beginning, Developing, Secure grading system. A Beginning grade would be exactly where a Kindergartener needs to be if the subject was only at an introductory level. The philosophy is that when kids are given a glimps
at future info, they are less intimidated and say "oh! I know how to do this!"
The games are wonderful too. They teach very valuable lessons but give the kids time to interact and see that math can be fun.

I think 'phasing in' is a good idea. The program can be difficult if you are thrown into it in a later grade, but the benifits are totally worth it.
I have worked with EM in two different schools, and my three boys had EM all through their elementery years.

Good luck making your choice!
