Writing observation
By Ro

Clip to ScrapBook
What about a Haiku? I've had lots of success with writing Haikus in 2nd and 3rd grade. The night before assign a topic (a season, an animal, the ocean, the weather, etc.) and have the kids make a list of the words for homework.
At the beginning of the lesson make a chart on the board that has five columns labeled for one to five syllable words.
Explain that a Haiku is a special japanese poem that is usually about nature and it must fit the five/seven/five syllable three line pattern. A Haiku paints a word picture about one single thing (leaves, trees, snow, etc) Have the children share their words.
Write them in the appropriate column.

Create one poem together. Then have the students try it themselves. Almost all of the children I've worked with have been able to do it. Some will just write three sentences, most will try to create a picture with their words. Good luck
