I'm not sure what the subject needs to be, but when I have been observed, teaching "making words" (by Pat Cunningham) lessons have always gone smoothly. If you have access to the book, they very clearly detail the sequence of lessons: review sounds of letters being used in lesson, guide sts. as they make the various words, work toward the final word, then categorize words according to first letter/word families/etc., and "transfer" the skills taught in this lesson to other words that these words might help them spell or read. For ex.: if you made the word "make", you would ask sts. what "make" could also help you spell...take, bake, rake, etc. They're great lessons because they're fun, hands-on, and engaging...but I wouldn't recommend doing this for an observation if you've never taught "making words" before--or practice before you do! Good luck
