    Grading
    By Kathy

I use any color that is handy to grade. I try to make it a color that will stand out and is different than the color the student used.

In the past I have put an X on wrong items, but a couple years ago I came across the idea to put two dots by incorrect items. Then when students correct the item, I can turn it into a "smile" face when it's now corrected. I love this concept and it helps students realize that mistakes are to be corrected. (We correct all our daily work.)

On tests I just write in the correct answer in pen. That way they can't change the answer and claim to have it correct. I put a fraction and grade on those papers.

I try to "spot-check" when I can. Thos I place a stamp/sticker/"smile face." I tell parents my "code" at the beginning of the year so they will know which papers have been carefully checked and recored in the grade book.

It's discouraging to the teacher when papers pile up--and it doesn't really follow the principles of immediate reinforcement for the children to get papers back that they did days ago. I try to return tests the next day when I can.
