Clip to ScrapBook
I feel homework is a positive! I give homework every day. Students must read every night for 20+ minutes and record in their reading logs. They have one sheet of math work per night and three weekly spelling assignments as
well. Occasionally I'll send home some extra grammar assignments. Over the weekend they only have to complete a small practice packet for the FCAT (our state's standardized test) which includes reading and math questions.
Doing (attempting) homework counts as 1/3 of a child's grade in reading and math, and 1/2 of a child's grade in spelling. I feel strongly that nightly practice of
subjects learned in class is crucial. I work at a Title I school, where most children are already somewhat behind and some of my children get no help at home. Yet homework comes in, mostly correct. We go over our mistakes, since I believe you learn best when you correct your errors.
I don't think nightly practice in reading, math, and spelling is too much -- those are the core subjects after all. I teach third grade.
