Although I'm sure you feel bad, I do think losing the toy was your fault and you need to hold yourself accountable. I agree with the poster who said that regardless of the monetary value, the item belonged to the child, you took it, and you lost it. You have to take care of it. Think about how you would feel as a child if your teacher took something away from you, despite the reason, and then lost it and didn't really acknowledge it. That's not very nice. Also, think about how you would react as a parent. You probably would be mad, too. Just use this as a learning experience.
