At the beginning of the year, I explain to the kids that although they had show and tell to show THINGS, in our 2nd grade classroom, we will have a talking share where you can share a story. The only time I allow a "thing" share is when the kids are Star of the Week. I find that too many kids want to "show off" their toys and that can make others who are less fortunate uncomfortable. I also model a talking share for a week or so by doing the talking shares myself. We discuss questions to ask and positive comments to make. It works really well.
