By putting all the talkers in the front of the class, BF Skinner would say that you are reinforcing their behavior. You may want to separate them, one on the left middle one on the right middle and one on the back of your class. Even though it's hard to do so at first, ignore them when they talk. Spend time praising the students who are working quietly. Walk around with stickers or a small treat now and then (do this at sporatic times so they won't anticipate when it will happen) and place it on the desks of the quiet students. Let students know how much you appreciate their good behavior. You'll be surprised how the behavior changes when these students have to exhibit 'quiet' behavior to get the praise or tangible reinforcer. You can have a big reward to work toward also, like a movie on Fri. afternoon, going out on the playground, a party or a trip. To earn the big reward, you must earn points each day until the event. You earn a point each day for working quietly and not having to make the teacher speak to you about behavior. To keep track, you can put a cut-out for each child(a star, a pumpkin something seasonal)on the board and put some kind of check mark or sticker on it each day. Usually at this is done at the end of the day. The students will need whatever number of stars for that week's big activity. Positive reinforcement works and it takes a lot less out of you in the long run.
