oh I remember those days, I took WV history in the 8th grade. Oh the Golden Horse shoe fun fun. I don't rememer exactly what we learned but I do remember how we learned it. It was an extensive portfolio that had a rubric.| You knew how to get an a, b, c, or d, it took a long time to prepare but it was fun. We drew the WV flag or created it any way we wanted to. We made the state bird, animal, fish, etc. Took pictures, went to the cultural center, colored maps and took a journey through WV. I don't live there anymore. I didn't appreciate WV until I left. One class at a school I student taught at | | had a college coarse called WV tourism. You essentailly had students become tour guides and experts on WV. They created posters and presentations on history, culture, geography and politics of WV. They had to become very professional and the day they presented their reports or tour expo they had high profile people come and see them. They in a sense become spokepeople for WV. I would even have them do a Website. I know this may seem overwhleming but the students you have are very capable. You could even have the mayor of your town come in and ask them what they would do. They could come up with their own guidelines, and lesson plans. Make them responsible for the year. I hope that helps. Above all have fun and le the students take responsibility for their learning through teaching. You could even have a Golden Horseshoe contest.
