owl pellets By Jennifer

I have done an owl unit with my class for the past three years. They absolutely love the owl pellet! I have always ordered them from Pellets, Inc. The students bring in $2.00 to cover the pellets and shipping fees. I| think it is important for each student to have their own. We have never had a "complete" skeleton, but very close. A lot of times the students will get more than one skull in their pellet (depending on the size you purchase). I had a copy of a bone sorting chart (can be purchased from Pellets, Inc), but I thought it was really too small. I used the copier to enlarge it on white construction | | paper and then laminated a class set. We have used them ever since. I don't think you really need to purchase a kit. Toothpicks work well for picking apart the pellets. Gloves get in the way! The pellets are heat sterilized so any harmful bacteria has been killed. I am writing a mini grant for our district this year in hopes of getting a class set of literature (The Magic School Bus Food Chains)and some additional resources from Pellets, Inc like transparencies, posters, and display. Summit Learning also has resources for owl pellets www.summitlearning.com. Good luck!
