observing

hi "Anonymous",
Without sounding defensive myself, I must say you sound defensive. Teaching is a very isolating profession- shut the door and it's just you and the kids all day. All teachers can benefit from observing
each other- no matter how long we've been at it. I can truly say, I learn new practices or techniques from seasoned and new colleagues all the time. In order to grow, you have to be open to seeing and maybe even trying new things- this is the art of teaching- combining research with the art and practice of pedagogy. I used to think that older teachers were just that- older with worn
out and outmoded ideas. Now I am in the midddle years and see it differently. Some of those ideas I thought were old fashioned are still around because they work. Some of the newest ideas will be just like any other sociological trend or fad- they will fade in their importance or relevance. After you have been teaching longer, you will see these trends and notice some pracitices survive or are modified to be updated or suit you personal style. Go and observe your colleague with and open and not defensive mind. Treat his/her technique ideas with the respect you would like and you may find a lot of great things going on. I bet if you follow up with this colleague for more info or advice, she/he may be open to your methods and ideas, which will, in turn, strengthen their teaching and build a solid professional relationship for you and him/her as well as showing your principal your maturity and willingness to grow and share. Everyone brings good ideas to the table. I have been at this over twenty years and still have a lifetime of learning and growing to get better at teaching- that is why I love it- there is always room for improvement. I wish our principal afforded time out to observe colleagues. Good luck and have a great year!
