Get a plan in motion
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I've had students like this in my classes. Here in Alberta we do not have "special education" classes - all students are fully integrated so it can make life quite interesting to say the least.

You need to be pro-active
on this one. Ask for a meeting with your special ed teacher and your Principal first thing on Monday. Ask them what is being done with this student and then state firmly that you do not want this child back in your classroom unless he has a full-time aide to help you assist with his behaviour. Tell them that not only are your student's safety in question, your safety is as well. If
you have a teacher's union or organization contact them as well just to give them a heads up.

WE DO NOT HAVE TO work in dangerous situations.

With a T.A. in the classroom you can then begin behaviour managment projects with this student. Our grade 2 teacher has a baseball count of 3 strikes. Strike 1 is a warning. Strike 2 is missing something fun (recess, gym, even a field trip), Strike 3 is a call home and often means being sent home for the rest of the day. Of course to get a strike it has to be specific behaviours not just talking outloud for example.

Giving time-outs where he can work off steam is smart - but needs to be organized and you need someone who can do this with him.

Also have an area outside the room where your TA can take him when he begins to show signs of losing control.

If he ends up back in your room please feel free to email me as I do have other ideas but I need to get back to my paperwork now. These students can be helped even in a regular school setting but it does take a lot of work and effort and the cooperation of your administration to make it effective.
