I sympathize with the students because... By Tricia

when I was in elementary school the teacher, one particular year, would get extremely annoyed because I was asking to go to the restroom...a lot! It got embarrassing for me to ask because she made such a big deal out of| it in front of my classmates. One morning, I really had to go...bad! Well, I raised my hand and asked and was given the riot act. Of course she wouldn't let me go! It wasn't long after that I had an accident and then was ridiculed in front of my classmates by the teacher. She made me clean the mess up while urine ran down my legs. The more I cried the more she yelled and my classmates | | snickered. I was then dragged to the office, signed out by my teacher and shown the door to walk the mile home to get clean clothes. It was winter and I had to walk home with my clothing soaked in urine and my shoes... My parents were furious that they weren't called and that I wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom when I needed to. Mom had told the teacher ofter that I tend to go to the restroom often. Well, it turns out that I had and still have allergies and one of the reactions I have to foods and inhalents is the increased need to go to the restroom. Teachers should be more aware that they will have students that do need to go more often than most and show some compassion. That was the year I didn't want to learn anymore and my grades took a dramatic drop. The teacher was terrible to me the rest of the year and wasn't a bit happy when the principal gave me a "go to the restroom anytime I want without asking" pass! I hated to be in that classroom! Did it affect the way others treated me? YES! I was humiliated each and every day by classmates over the whole thing. What grade was I in? The fourth. Please, teachers, just be more sensitive to your students and don't see lame excuses as to why they have to go to restroom. You can be causing emotional problems for a student and so need to be more sensitive to them...even if it means they go to the restroom more than most. Put your own child in that place...how would you react if they were denied the right to go to the restroom and it was upsetting them to the point that they hated going to the classroom?
