A split SE teacher...
By Kate

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

I am a Special Ed teacher who is unfortunately splitting time between classes. One reason for this is that I have a new initiative that I am responsable for - a lab model from the U of Kansas - where I service every
student once a day. In addition, I still coteach, now just for half periods. I am spread extremely thin! I am barely able to cover my responsabilities well as a special ed teacher (consults, coteach, parent communication, case management, team meetings) as dictated by my IEPs. Even without the lab, I have heard that many other special ed teachers are in the same boats. I think that
unfortunately, there is a push by some administrators and other folk to limit services during the IEP meeting, which may make for changes which we are all having trouble adjusting to!

I agree, as in some of the other posts, that students seem both lower and needier than in times past. Special Ed and general ed populations alike! Not only that, in our state there is no limit for student numbers within a class.

Last year our school was leveled by ability, and this year we are heterogeneous. I have not seen a difference so far, and the same groups of kids still seem to exist by ability.

EEEEK! Its enough to make me pull my hair out!!! Thank God for Yoga and meditation!!!
