Check books by Andrew Clements (Frindle, etc.). They are set in school and involve bright children, literacy and imagination. He has several books out now. My third graders love Roald Dahl books--very funny, imaginative and high vocabulary (The Twits, etc.) If he is mature also, he may be ready for Garry Paulsen who has a boys adventure series as well as his famous book Hatchet and many other nature/survival stories which are longer.
