Book it
By Mary Ann Brincks

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi, Laurie, I teach second grade and over the years I used to set goals of so many books per month or so many minutes per day. Then a few years ago, I decided since the parents are the ones that have to do this with their
child, I let them set the goals. I wrote a letter and told them what I had done in the past and asked that they talk it over with their child and set a reasonable goal for them to complete each month. I'm a parent, myself, and some years I felt my children's teachers set the goals too high for some kids, my son included. They aren't good readers and get very frustrated with it. And you
end up fighting with them to do it. If I let the parents and child set the goal, they will feel successful when they meet it. Interestingly enough, most will choose the number I set in the past! This way, your lower readers can set goals that they can meet! And the ultimate goal of Book it is to get the child to read, anyway!
