So, in subtracting 50,000-21,345, We put 9's over the middle 0's; 4 over the 5 and the last 0 gets the ten added to it. (or whatever digit is in the ones place). Anytime we have numbers with zeroes, we know this pattern and don't even have to worry about it. My kids LOVE subtracting across zeroes now.
