Neutral reasons are best
By BN

Clip to ScrapBook
Does your school district require teachers to hand in a letter/form of intent? If it does that would be the time to inform the principal. If not and you feel that it would be an uncomfortable situation I would tell the principal
as close to the end of the year as possible.Sometime in the fourth quarter would be good.

You do not have to tell your principal your personal feelings for leaving. The principal does not need to know these personal feelings and you don't want your reasons to come back and haunt you. What if the new princiapl calls the old principal and asks why you left? Say something neutral. You

would like a position closer to home. You might be moving. You are going to grad school.Telling the principal you are miserable at her/his school is not leaving on good terms. And what would you say to any prespective principals when asked why you left? Even saying the former school wasn't a good fit doesn't sound too good.Better to say-- I would like a position closer to home -or- I am now staying in the area and I am currently looking for a new postion. Something neutral that does not comment on your former school.

Good luck.
