Reg. Teacher says NO!
By Amanda K.

Clip to ScrapBook
In our district, the subs are taught in orientation to grade the papers before they go home. This drives me crazy (mainly because I know the teacher who does orientation and I know she says this to subs because she doesn't
want to grade her own papers if she misses a day.)

First, I've been a sub and I know you don't always (hardly ever) have enough time. Second, I have certain ways I grade things and the sub can't be expected to know how I do it. For example, in the first trimester in first grade in our district, reverse numbers are acceptable and can't be marked wrong. Now, some poor sub who very

kindly graded all my papers did not know that, of course, and graded everything wrong. I had to redo them later, and I felt like her precious time had been wasted just because she was told something in orientation that most teachers in our district don't agree with.

Now, I put a statement in my plans that says, "Please do not grade papers, just collect and leave in the work folder for me."

So, no, you are not being "stubborn/arrogant/lazy/whatever." Most teachers I know do NOT want the sub to grade the papers, unless, of course, you are on a long term assignment. And I guess it's different if the teacher wants the students to grade their own/each other's papers as a learning tool, and it's something they are used to doing.
