digraphs
By JoJo

Clip to ScrapBook
First of all, these are not blends. Consonants in blends keep their own sounds, but "blend them together"... like "bl".

CH, TH, and SH are called consonant digraphs. We call these "magic sounds" with our students, because
the sounds are completely changes to make a new sound. PH and WH are also consonant digraphs. These really just need to be memorized.

We use zoophonics, and one of our teachers made up these great stories to help the kids memorize these digraphs. Here's a quick version of one:

SH- Sammy Snake went mouse hunting one day. His friend Honey Horse went along, but her hooves were

making too much noise. So Sammy Snake kept saying "SH" to her. So, whenever you see Sammy and Honey together, you say "SH".

Perhaps you can make up stories along with this boy for each of the digraphs.
