Small group By Lori

I also teach small group guided reading while the children rotate in centers. I do not have any help, so you need to be prepared for some interruptions during group for questions. I feel the need for small groups to teach| strategies and also to insure that all children are reading at their level. I did four blocks guided reading last year, and just felt that my children didn't get as much as they did with the leveled groups. Another option is if you do Reader's Workshop and another activity the chidden can be more independent with at that time. You could have them do Reader's Workshop with their book boxes | | and a journal for twenty minutes, and maybe some word practice or something. Then you might find mid year they are more ready for centers without so much support. Our district is really into differentiated instruction so I find if I really take the time to differentiated the centers for each child, they can really do with less help. For example at book making last week the three highest groups had to write in the book about their dog. The lower groups had blanks to fill in in the book. Please feel free to email me and maybe I could tell you my centers. Some are kinda more no brainers like library, etc. Which is helpful too. Lori
