Tracing
By Sharon D. W-L

Clip to ScrapBook
I also have children double check letter and number reversals in grade 1. I have one girl who just does not recognize yet that her number is backwards. Most of the others do and can fix them themselves. With this one
child I have her sit with me a few minutes. (Not all the time, but whenever I can squeeze her in.) I will print the number in orange or pink pen and have her trace it. The one she often reverses is 5. I did too! I do it in steps with her.

Come downstairs (draw the stick)
Make a big bowl of porridge (make the belly)
Put your hat on and go to school (go back to the top and make

the top line - hat). My own mother used this one for me.

I have my student trace my steps and then try and get her to do another one independently. However, she often can not do it without tracing yet. It will just take her more time - that's all.

Another one she has trouble with is 3: Around a tree and around a tree, that is how we make a three!

I'd love to hear more number and letter stories for printing... Last year in a 2/3 class I had a lot of students still reversing the letters "b" and "d". I used this one: d - the dinosaur head bumps into a door, silly dinosaur. b - a bat and a ball. I think these came from the Blended Sound and Sight Program.
