substitute teachers
By substitute teachers

Clip to ScrapBook
Let us all remember that subs are called in, sometimes arriving on campus only 10 or so minutes before the kids, and they are expected to quickly grasp the overall picture of a classroom we have spent literally weeks or months
developing. Add to that children who know it is not a 'normal' day; who will act all sorts of ways not expected by the regular teacher.

I think we really have to give subs their due.

So, my point is that many subs really try to do what they can BUT IT WILL NEVER BE AS GOOD FOR THEM AS IT IS FOR US.

That said, there is NO EXCUSE for lousy subs - the ones we hear horror stories

about. Do you know who I think is the real culprit? Personnel. For not having some system in place to weed these people out.

Subs need to be interviewed. They need their references checked. Letters of recommendation would be extremely appropriate. After all, subbing is a real job just like any other job.

If the District is lax about its sub hiring method there's not much we can do.
