Good subs/bad plans By mc

I know that there are many subs out there who do not take their jobs seriously. I was appalled by what happened while you were out, but a day with a sub is not a day with their teacher and kids of all ages know that. They| try things you'd never expect. I am requested often to sub at many schools and one of the things I hear a lot is "OH - that class is really good". Well great - but keep in mind your class might be good for you but that's NOT to say they are going to be good for a sub. the bathroom incident was awful I agree but could it be that the kids were trying that ole "there's a sub lets all ask | | over and over to go to the bathroom" thing? did you leave a note indicating how you do restroom breaks? I know it may seem crazy but teachers need to leave "DETAILED" plans. I leave notes occasionaly that tell the teacher "your kids had a bad day but I leave reasons WHY - I give examples, I write down exactly what they did. the question is -- do teachers take the time to explain to their "little darlings" what they are supposed to do when a sub is there. I have my own classroom now in a long term capacity that I started the year with and I have a big talk with my kids before I'm out and I explain to them that bad behavior while a sub is in our room is just like bad behavior for me. They know I will read the sub's note to them. We will talk about thier day with a sub and I get feedback from the kids as well. I tell my subs - I want the names of any child who ask repeatedly to leave the room, I want the names of any child who misbehaves and I want a note telling me what they did.
