Out of control classes
By Kelly

Clip to ScrapBook
Sounds like one of the classes at my school. I teach at an inner city school and the english classes are prone to behaviour problems.

How supportive is your administration? Mine is as awesome as they get and they offer
a lot of support.

One strategy I would recommend is to create a visual icon for the desks of those who need the constant reminder. I helped a grade 2 teacher impliment it this year and her class has a bee theme so we laminated 3 bees and put velcro dots on the desk to affix them. Start the day with a one on one and explain what behaviours you are seeing in them that must stop. Tell

them that they are interferring with the learning of those around them and if they choose not to learn then that is their choice but you are not going to allow them to prevent others from learning. Each time they are seen acting out or disrupting the class you remove a bee/icon. It is done with no warning first. When it is taken I would add a quiet comment to the student encouraging them to make better choices and hang on to those last two. If all three are taken then they must leave the room. We have a buddy system set up in our school. So the grade 2 teacher is teamed with a grade 5 French immersion class. The disruptive student is escorted with work to this room. This is typically intinidating for them. They are not welcome to return until the work is completed. In the case of the grade 2 class at our school using this system sch has dou-tangs filled with appropriate work that is at the ready. The incentive to keep all three could be computer time, choice of a favourite activity in the class or sugar. Whatever motivates each child.

The child that this was instituted for in our grade 2 class was about as disruptive as I have ever seen and having this visaul, non-nagging reminder in front of her was enough to elleviate many of her outbursts.

Hope this helps but if it isn't quite what you are looking for send me an email and I will send you someof the other behaviour management plans we use at our school.

Good Luck!
