That's a toughie b/c when parents come in convinced their kid is a brainiac and you, as their teacher, can clearly see they're not, how do you let them know nicely that their child is average or maybe above average but not gifted. What I would do is, keep samples or copies of the child's work, label what is on grade level, what is above, and what you would expect from a student who is well above grade level as a comparison. Share this with the parents during conferences. If they persist, you can defrag them (maybe) by asking what they would like to see their child doing, and then follow through, because what will most likely end up happening is the kid will get stressed or resist ... are they going to keep pushing then? You can then intervene in the classroom and let them know you have noticed that with the enrichment, s/he is having a difficult time keeping up with the work and functions more comfortably on grade level with some enrichment.
