One suggestion I have for you is to get a book and read about the "four block" approach to teaching reading for upper grades. It is a great way to include spelling,phonics,writing and reading all in your integrated language arts class. I have been teaching for almost 30 years and in the last 2 years have felt the best since I started implementing a four block approach!
