I had a similar problem last year. I think part of the problem is that the children do not know how to become organzied. It is a skill that needs to be taught. Checklists work very well with the students. Place a small checklist on the top of their desk as a constant reminder of what needs to be done. This may help to avoid some of the issues. Also, clear instructions as to where items need to be placed is also important. Make sure to follow through and check every day to make sure things are where they are supposed to be. Do not clean their desks for them. Make them responsible for cleaning.
