Australia
By Lori

Clip to ScrapBook
Well, I'm not from the land down under, but here are some book suggestions:

Mem Fox -- Australian Author -- especially Koala Lou, Possum Magic, and Wilfred MacDonald Gordon Partridge ( I think that is the correct order)

Another
good one is The Pumpkin Runner by Marsha Arnold.

Dingoes at Dinnertime is a Magic Tree House book set in Australia -- would make a good read aloud.

A fun story with an Australian tie in is Katy No Pocket. It is a old classic, but the kids still like it. It's about a Kangaroo without a pocket.

Sun Mother Wakes the World is an Australian creation story.

Big Rain Coming

by Katerina Germain takes place in the Outback with Aboringinal characters.

Best Beak in Boonaroo Bay by Natalie Oliver -- The birds of Australia's Boonaroo Bay hold a contest to determine which of them has the best beak.

Look What Came From Australia is a nice easy non-fiction picture book by Kevin Davis

Australian Animals by Caroline Arnold -- gives a brief description of the unique animals of Australia.

Australia (Rookie Read About Geography) by Allan Fowler is an very brief and easy to read introduction the the continent.

Australia (New True Books) by David Petersen is another fairly easy to read non-fiction introduction to the features of the continent of Austrailia.

As for music -- the Kookabura song and Waltzing Matilda come to mind. Also, you might could use some of the Crocodile Hunter videos for animals, etc.

There is also a book called My Place by Nadia Wheatley. It might be a bit too old for 2nd grade but it is a picture book history of Australia.

Have fun! Lori
