Sped
By Donna

Clip to ScrapBook
None of my kids know who receives accommodations or services and who does not, with the exception of one pullout for OT services. I teach first grade and my master's is in sped even though I teach a regular 1st grade class.

From
day one, I have explained that everyone is smart in different ways (6 year old version of multiple intelligences). We then had a discussion that some people are smart in reading, some are smart in sports, somea re smart in art, some are smart in making friends, etc. They seemed to get it.

I then explain (and have on a number of occassions), that so and so may need my help for

reading right now, but at some point this year YOU may be the one that needs help. That's why we are in school. I also explain that just because YOU might need a bandaid, does that mean that everyone should get a bandaid too if they don't need it?

Very basic explanantions.
I can't help you out with multi-cultural stuff since we are VERY homogenous, but because of that, I introduce literature that highlights children from other cultures in a very "normal" way so that my kdis can see that we are more alike then different. And that gets extended into our classroom.

Hope this helps!
D
