Enough SOLs! By tested out
|
|
I understand the purpose of SOLs to have teachers focus on certain things for each grade level so that you know what the students have been taught before they come to your classroom. My problem with the SOLs is that they| don't necessarily match up to the age/maturity of the students. I teach third grade and when I moved here I couldn't believe that they had to learn about representative democracy, ancient Greece/Rome, for example. The kids in my class are still just realizing that there is a world out there beyond where they live, let alone teach them about what life was like soooo many years ago and | | what contributions came from which ancient civilization. There is so much emphasis on the SOL tests that you really have no time to explore a concept in great deal because you are crunched to have everything taught a month before school is out in time for the tests. I don't like it.Sorry if this sounds harsh. I do understand the purpose behind them, I just don't think they are really implented or distributed properly.
