My sixth graders are terrible spellers! I was a third grade teacher and now sixth and I work on phonics and spelling in class not just assign for homework. I believe it is in the editing. My class doesn't edit thoroughly. I don't know if they will grow into it or not. Perhaps a high school teacher will let us know. Some of these poor spellers I had in third grade and while I see how much they've grown their spelling is atrocious! Rote, drill and kill, chanting, etc. is the only answer to these guys.
