I teach third grade so this may not be appropriate for you. When my students will not quite talking I tell them that we are going to practice being quiet since when they take the state assessment they will need to be silent| all day long. At first I shut off the lights and make them put their heads done for about 5 minutes. Later on I tell them that they can keep their heads up if they think that they can practice being quiet that way. Eventually I even leave the lights on. This has taken as much as 6 weeks to get to the point where I ask them if they need to practice being quiet, and they get quiet. Maybe | |
you could modify it by telling them that there are times in school when you must be quiet and you are going to practice, then maybe give a sticker or other small incentive to all who manage to "play the quiet game" successfully. Hope this helps.
