lesson plan - science
By Cathy-Dee

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm with the others in that this would be much too complex for grade one students especially at the beginning of the year.

some suggestions

The five senses is an easy unit to plan for. You could do a lesson plan that
would incorporate 5 days (5 groups of students).

Pick one of the five senses and plan 5 centers the students can rotate through. This could be a full-week lesson (one center per day) or you could have students do this for a full afternoon or half afternoon.

The two easiest senses would be touch and hearing.

center ideas

- touch - make a braille card (use split peas)

- make up a concentration game with items glued on cardboard squares - students are blindfolded and have to match items
- put their hands into a bag and touch an item and then record it on a sheet (what they think it is - they can write or draw) - I usually do 12 items
- put items into socks and have them feel with their feet and record on a sheet

hearing - use film canisters - make up 12 canisters with items inside - students shake and then draw or write what they think is inside
- do a hearing memory match with film canisters - make up pairs of canisters (about 10 pairs) and have students shake and try to match the sounds.
- set up a listening center with a bingo sound game (most teaching stores carry these)

As far as assessment goes - you would do informal assessment through observation and also questioning the students on what they have discovered.

PowerPoint would definitely be too hard with most grade 1 students.
