play mummy ball
By Cathy

Clip to ScrapBook
My kids love mummy ball. There are only three rules and no teacher input once the game is in action. Here is the game in a nutshell

Mummy Ball Rules

Kids stand in a circle and toss a soft nerf ball to each other. There
are three ways to get out. 1. If you talk, you're out.
2. If you drop the ball, you're out.
3. If you make a bad throw that someone couldn't catch, you're out.

Each child makes the decision as to whether or not he/she could have caught it and whether they take themselves out of the game. Some kids "cheat" and stay in but then, nobody tosses them the ball and so if they do

this too much, they exclude themselves form the game. Once the kids are out, they stand around the outer circle watching and don't talk until there is a winner.

I played this game in a course I took this summer and was very skeptical about how it would work. On a crazy Friday afternoon, mummy ball is a Godsend!! It's called mummy ball because "mum's" the word--no talking or you're out. I usually give the last kid in a treat. They love it and they never seem to get tired of it. Even when we go out to recess, they ask me if they can take the mummy ball outside to play! Kids are funny!
