You're welcome. I can see you have a dilemna. You have a lot of criteria to work with-- 30 min., sci method or phys property design, first graders and an observation. Why do the students have to form a hypothesis? Can't | it be teacher guided? How about a simple exp. that follows the sci method and is teacher guided.(Objective: Students will be guided through the steps of the sci. method and perform an exp. on the needs of seeds for germination.)Considering that your kiddies are so young that might be the best way. Question*.Teacher: What do seeds need to sprout or germinate? Research. Brainstorm | | What do seeds need? Student reponses: air, water, soil, sun... Hypothesis*.Teacher: OK Let's chose two things a seed needs to form a statement or hypothesis. Seeds need water and soil to sprout. Experiment*.Teacher: Now, we are going to exp and test the two things-- water and soil. Activity using lima beans, ziplock baggies, soil, water Record*.Record on a chart on large chart paper This would have to be filled in everyday for a few days Conclusion*. On chart paper. * I would write all this on chart paper to post in the room. Kids can see it and so will the person doing the observing! You can than review the parts of the sci method. Phys. properties-- The kids have to design the boxes and compose the riddles? I think that would be a little difficult for first graders.I have done an activity where the teacher designs the mystery boxes and the students use their senses to describe the objects in the boxes. Also, I'm not very good at composing riddles either! Rachel, I hope you find an act. that fits your kiddies academically and will be good for an observation. Good luck. BN
