Have you heard of the multiple intelligence theory? Tests tend to meet the needs of only linguistic learners...which can be biased if you use tests to represent the majority of a student's grade. Labs and projects cater to the learner that learn best in a different style.

So, I believe that to look at comprehension you have to look at every aspect of the class.
