I agree with seeing the guidance counselor. Try to set up a meeting where at least you, the parent, and the counselor are there. Maybe the principal and the student as well. Talk about the importance of independence and things like that. Maybe you can even make a compromise. Maybe so this child can go on the field trip, the mom gives you a cell phone (or if you have one you can bring yours), you hold onto the phone, and then the student can call the mom when they reach the destination, just so the mom is okay with everything.
