Vowel Cheer
By Jamie

Clip to ScrapBook
Here is a cheer I used with Pre-K. The children loved it! You say the cheer and the children repeat or answer as appropriate.

(Teacher) Give me an "A"
(Students) Give me an "A"
(Teacher and Students together) A
A A (this is the sound the letter makes either long or short sound)
(Teacher) Give me an "E"
etc.

(Last Verse-Teacher) And sometimes "Y"
(Students) And sometimes "Y"

We did this cheer standing at our chairs with the following motions:

Everyone begins with knees slightly bent, hands on thighs. Teacher Says "Ready, O.K."
Everyone stands straight.

For A-Hands are over

head, fingers touching
For E-Arms are straight out to sides, level with shoulders
For I-Arms are straight up, hands not touching (make an arc to transition from E to I)
For O-Round out arms over head, like a ballerina
For U-Arms like letter E, but bend arms up at elbows.
For Y-Go back to starting position: Knees slightly bent and hands on thighs.

We would first do short vowel sounds and then long vowel sounds. I combined this cheer with the overhead and wrote the vowels with the appropriate marks for short and long sounds. By the end of the year, my Pre-K students could sound out words based on the diacritical marks.
