From your description, you absolutely did the right thing and anybody who doesn't know the difference between a teen acting out for attention and a schitzophrenic who has not been taking her meds, shouldn't be a guidance counselor. He also should not have blindsided you that way. Your instincts were correct. You calmed her down and got the knife. She wasn't in immediate danger to herself or anybody else.
