backward letters
By Lori

Clip to ScrapBook
I've taught 2nd grade for over 30 years and trust me, backward letters have always been here! My approach is to make sure you have the student correct the letter as soon as possible. Whenever we have spelling tests I try
to remind the students to double check the letters they have problems with.(numbers also) At first I do not tend to count the words wrong unless I cannot tell what the letter is such as the b and d. Much later in the year I may tell certain students that I'll count them wrong if I feel they're not putting much effort into improvement. Some children have a great deal of trouble with backward
letters. In those cases I try to keep a closer eye on them so they can correct right away. These methods have worked for me so that by the end of the year most of the problems are gone and the more severe ones have been greatly reduced. It is also VERY important to catch the students making the letter correctly on their own and to praise them for that.
