One option is to forget the lab coats and go with lab hats instead...I did this last year and it worked. They sell plain white painting type hats at Michael's (a craft store) for 99 cents a piece. I used permanent markers to put each name on the brim, wrote scientist around it and then they could decorate the rest if they wanted. I even used 5 different colors for the names so I had lab groups when I needed them.
