I have a format I follow when I do GR. Each lesson begins with a letter and/or word review. I then introduce words that students may have a difficult time figuring out. I point those words out and we discuss them. The students then look through the book and decide if there are any words they think they may have a difficult time figuring out. As a group we work through those words. The students then read the book and I listen as they read and take notes. I then check for comprehension. I always end my lesson reviewing the words the students thought would be difficult and the strategy used to figure them out. My lesson takes anywhere from 20 - 30 minutes. By using these strategies most of my students learn their letters and the associated sound(s) by March. There are alway a few who still have a difficult time and these are the ones I talk to parents about possible retention. I teach in an inner city school where many of the parents are unable to read themselves so GR is very important in my room.
