Chatterboxes
By Diane

Clip to ScrapBook
My class is full of "social butterflies" who love to talk, talk, talk. I purchased a musical cookie jar that looks like a dog. It plays "You Ain't Nothing but a Hounddog" and "Who Let the Dogs Out?". I use it as a group
reward system. When we leave the class I tap children on the shoulder and ask them to jive when we get back to our class. Only the quietest are given an invitation. During work time, I look for the quietest working group and ask them to jive when our quiet time is over. It has lasted through the first six weeks and is still proving to be effective. I recently found a musical turkey
at Wal-Mart that plays "The Chicken Dance". I plan to use it later in the year!

On an individual basis, I use logical consequences. If you choose to play and talk during our work time, you will need to work during our recess break. It usually just takes one or two times to make the point. Love and logic is working well for me. Good luck.
