ESL/Bilingual

Hi Shelli,

It's funny that you asked where to start. We just started a bilingual program here at the school and the only teacher in charge of the program asked herself the same question. It's wonderful that you have
a parent to help you out. I would suggest her to reinforce what you are teaching in your ESL class. Whatever you do in English, she should do in Spanish. However she should also introduce some English words in her teaching. The targeted students should continue their education in their foreign language. That will greatly help them acquire English. Her lessons should be the same as yours.
After a few lessons, the students will let her know their pace of learning. You should not segregate them or make them feel any different than they already are. So if they are doing the same lesson as the rest of the class, it will give them a sense of belonging.

Try using the Rigby Series of books, they are great for Non-English speakers. Also get yourself a great picture dictionary. Focus on phonics, vocabulary words, and lots of visual aids. A good website that you might want to try is www. starfall.com. Good luck.
