Clip to ScrapBook
I read content texts in a variety of ways.
Here are a few ideas:

Use graphic organizers.
i.e. for plant& animal cells Do a venn diagram.

Have a genric circle organizer made up.Label the circles with the topics.Tell
students to read pg.35-40 and fill in the circles with facts about topics as you read. They can do this alone or with a partner.

Partner read. One person reads. The other jots down notes on impt facts. Then switch

I write "read to questions/statements" on the board. (Read to find such and such.)
Read page 78-82 to find the following info.
Define photosyntesis
What is

the difference between a moncot and a dicot? Individually or pair reading.

Read pg. 67-79
and write four questions from the material in your notebook. Leave spaces for the answers.
I then have students switch notebbooks and answer the questions.

We read a section as a class in order to model reading in the content areas-- SQRR

Survey the reading section. Look it over. Look at pictures, graphs, headings (Heading--cells,photos of plant and animal cells...)

Ask a question (What is the differnce between plant and animal cells?)

Read to answer your question
(I'll read this section to find the difference between plant and animal cells)

Review

Sometimes as students are reading a section aloud I do a chain diagram or web of facts on the board. We then review the web.

If it's a large reading assinment. Assign each group five pages or more. Have each group read their assigned pages and write the important facts. Each group then presents the impt. facts to the whole class. They can write the impt. facts on a transparency and the class can copy notes.

Kids like to do these and it's great practice for reading in the contents areas. Their reading and science retention does improve after doing these activities. Hope this helps.
