GUMS and Stategies By Mandy
|
| GUMS means grammar, usage and mechanics and spelling. This is where kids get graded for capitals and punctuation and spelling. We talk about this at the beginning of the year a good bit. We also practice revising and editing a good bit too to help in this area!I am working on a website for the reading strategies I use in my classroom. Mentally I break reading into befiore reading, during reading and after reading. I plan according to "where" we are. I have some listed on my website for before reading. I am moving out of my classroom into a trailer (long story) and haven't had the time to devote to my website. Its coming! My favoring during reading strategy is "think marks." I think this is Fountas and Pinell. Kids are given post it notes. Anytime they think when they read (it should be ALL the time- we are working up to realizing that) they write down what they are thinking on the post-it. it can be comparing it to another sotry, life experience, questions, feeling, a thought to share or a prediction and so on. We then share these during groups. They can lead to great conversation. Check my site for more.
