Signals: I made a chart like the one in the book listed above. I do a mini-lesson on signals in reading and what to do when you see that signal.
period- pause and then continue
comma-short pause-
exclamation-show
excitement when you read it
question- change your tone at the end of the sentence
quotations-someone is speaking so talk like the character

I write a small story on chart paper that lends itself to the signal mentioned above. I read it through to them wrong and they listen for mistakes. Then I read it correctly so they can hear how it should sound. They each have a turn to

read it correctly.

Say it like the character- I read each character with a voice like that character. They love this and have started doing this as well.
