I UNDERSTAND..............
By BrandiLW

Clip to ScrapBook
I also have a fifth grader on a first grade level in all subjects. I agree with having him/her get a mentor or a "high" student to buddy up with. I would talk to the "high" student and explain that "John Doe" needs a friend
that can maybe explained things on a student to student level. However, I strongly DISAGREE with only giving him a little bit of fifth grade work. You should get some of the first and second grade teachers to start putting a copy of their worksheets in your mailbox and send them home with him/her and let the parents help him/her with it or when they have a few extra minutes in class.
I believe that even though he/she cannot do the grade level work, he or she needs to try and get the grade for that grade level work that he or she does.
Believe me, he/she will be extremely frustrated at some point, but you can't give grades they don't deserve by doing another grade level assignment. Help the best you can, that is all we can do. Good luck.
