But I teach grade 2. The children never leave without asking, and I've never had to deal with that issue. I do have kids who go directly to the bathroom or water bubbler on their way indoors from recess, and I don't like that, which I have told them. My reasoning: "I get very worried when I know you have all gone out for recess, but not all of you come back. I wonder where you are and if you're ok. You need to let me know where you're going to be whenever I'm not with you." If you teach a higher grade, this might work ... I don't know?
